You can use Curvy Maps (Displacement) to create complex scifi effects quickly without needing to model or worry about topology:

The shapes are simple Lathes and Lines.
I used this abstract greyscale image as a Curvy Map (Displacement) and as a Bumpmap.
I generated this cavity map by using "HighPass" in GIMP, it helps add contrast to the material without making the 'lower' parts too dark. Applied as Diffuse texture.
