I'm quite puzzled: this approach of quickly generating 3D models from hand-drawn sketches is so clever — why don't any of the mainstream software packages have this feature today?

It is surprising. A lot of people like using Curvy for base-meshes then take it into other software to finish up and render.
Personally I like the speed at which I can create models, it so fun
