Greebles

Post by Simon »

I've been experimenting with adding noisy details using greebles and Mesh/Deform/Fit to Surface.

I want to be able to add localised areas of random detail to larger models - by joining a lot of little shapes into a big mesh, then cutting out the piece I want to use.

Rendering a height and ambient occlusion map to use a greebled mesh as a simple texture with bumpmapping.

Due to the way it works internally it is fast to use Fit to Surface on the original Curve based Lathe/Loft/Line objects.

If you try and use it on a Mesh type object it will take much much longer with less predictable results.

In practice, this means if you are making a part that is a cut down Lathe or Loft, you should keep a hidden copy of the uncut Curve based Object to use for Fit to Surface and arrange or clip your greebles to the area you want to keep.
