Start simple and have some fun building up your skills.

a few lathe lines and some standard objects are all you need.
flood fill your objects with the paint tools.
The help manual should have enough info to do that.

learn to render your scene in curvy first.
it will teach you some of the basics of lighting and materials.

a very quick curvy render, i loaded a background image before the render.

you can then if you wish use other renderers.
i use bryce simply because that is the one i have used over many years.
