I think Curvy had problems working out the overlap to weld to parent. In these cases you can cut parts of the meshes out with the lasso tool, Mesh/Join them, and use Mesh/Stitch Holes to join them together. Voxel Merging will create meshes with a number of triangles proportional to the surface area ...

I recommend sculpting with "Mirror Sculpt" turned off for Clay and Flatten brushes - then use "Mirror [Ctrl+M]" to make the object symmetrical.

This can happen with double sided objects like the Loft. If you sculpt on the back side of the object the sculpting effect is reversed.

An alternative to Displacement Maps, that require high-poly meshes, is Volume Textures. They look similar but can work even on low res meshes.

You can turn on Z-Depth rendering on the Camera Panel, and the option "Show Depth". Then when you save the animation it will output depth as greyscale.
