Spinning Top
I was playing with tiling symmetry in GIMP and drew this texture. Thought it might look good on a spinning top. Made a second version of the texture with motion blur for the spin effect.

I do use anatomy reference sketches of front and side views of similar characters, google is very helpful.

Potentially yes, if you tweaked the format a little. It is the same idea translated into a system that makes sense to an artist rather than a physics person.
