Trouble scaling on Z axis.

Post by marksolberg »

I have a single line lathe object and I don't seem to be able to scale it only in the Z axis. If I hold the X or Y key it scales like I expect but if I hold the Z key the object only moves around the screen. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks,
Mark

If you use axis scaling on a Lathe it will only scale the Curves, and not the final object. So if you had a semi-circle Curve making a Sphere lathe, then scale the semi-circle, it does not change shape in Z as it is already flat in Z.

By contrast if you convert the lathe to a mesh using the menu option "Model/Convert to Mesh" or press 'K'... then when you axis-scale the whole sphere will be squashed making an M&M type shape.

The last scenario is if you want to keep the Lathe made of Curves - in this case use clone curve, or draw new curves so your Lathe has a front and back line as well as the side line. Now it has some definition along the z-axis and will scale as you would expect.
