painting inner object

I have a sphere coloured blue, copy/paste to create another sphere on same location, coloured it grey, converted to mesh for sculpting.
Sculpt Sub centre of outer sphere to reveal the inner sphere which is now grey.
How do I keep the colour of the inner object?
Was it lost in the mesh? I used K

If you have two objects selected at once, setting colour will change them both - this might be why both spheres changed grey.

Normally converting to mesh would not change the colour.

Simon, the process I am following is:
Create one sphere, rename it, resize it and colour it.
Select the select pointer tool.
point to the sphere and use Edit/Copy/Paste
From the object list panel I see another sphere has appeared.
I select that sphere and rename it.
I then resize and paint it a different colour.
Convert to mesh using K
select Sub sculpt tool.
Click on the sphere and get down to the next object but that is now the same colour as the 2nd one not as set before for sphere 1.

Following those instructions I get two colours when I sculpt into the 2nd sphere, as expected. I changed the Base Colour but it works with vertex colour too.

You can see through the spheres by pressing "A" so you can spot exactly when the first sphere is turning grey.

Ctrl+D anf Ctrl+F would paste the object colour onto the current object (which may be grey if you had one on the clipboard before).

Otherwise I can't say as I can't reproduce the issue here.

Ok, I will try again but in the mean time if I sculpt down to see the inner sphere should I be able to paint that inner sphere a different colour from the outer sphere.
I am asking because I cannot.

Further to this if I move the larger sphere to the side and try to paint it a different colour it paints both.
I have set the paint size to maximum.
Does that mean it paints both becasue the paint size is depth as well as width?

At the moment it seems the best I can do is create the spheres separately, colour each one and then move them all to centre as accurately as I can.

Aha - one issue here is to do with the different ways you can colour an object.

Colouring:
1) Paint a texturemap - when copied syncs with copies by default (as there is still one texture just shared between two models)
2) Paint vertices - will paint differently on each copy
3) Set object material colour (eg: Base and Ambient Light colours) - will edit differently once copied

If you want to use a different painted texture on 2 models you need to create 2 texturemaps. Typically by loading a new texture, or selecting one of the default white/grey blank textures.

For uniformly coloured objects setting the material colour is much simpler.
